			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>An international price comparison study has highlighted the UK as the World’s most expensive country for a cinema ticket. Brits also pay top whack for condoms, cigarettes and travel.<br />

The annual study by www.PriceRunner.co.uk, the price comparison service, revealed that the average price of a cinema ticket in the UK is a staggering £8.90, compared to Hungary where a night at the flicks is just £3.14, which is 65% cheaper. Across the 29 cities included in the study, London is the second most expensive city overall with Brits paying over the odds for a vast array of consumer goods, including mobile handsets and other gadgets; with devices like the Microsoft Xbox costing a whopping £269.66 in the UK, compared to just £161.73 in Tokyo and £178.63 in New York.</p>
<p><strong>Condoms getting cheaper</strong></p>
<p>Although the UK is still one of the most expensive places to buy condoms, prices have been steadily falling. In 2003, 12 Durex condoms would have set you back £9.31, whereas now they cost just £7.57. Shanghai has the best global price on condoms with 12 costing only £2.27. Shanghai is also cheapest for cigarettes with 20 Marlboro Lights costing a measly £0.92.</p>
<p>The global <a href="http://www.pricerunner.co.uk" class="kblinker" target="_blank" title="More about pricerunner &raquo;">PriceRunner</a> study shows that the price of cigarettes has steadily risen in the UK, with a packet of 20 Marlboro Lights costing £4.95 in 2003 compared with £5.33 today.</p>
<p>Mattias Berg, UK Managing Director, PriceRunner commented &#8220;Not only is London the most expensive place in the World to watch a film, but Brits have to pay more than anyone other country on a number of key consumer goods. It’s good to see that condoms and other items are coming down in price, but Brits still get a raw deal on entertainment items such as cinema tickets.&#8221;</p>
<p><strong><br />
Christmas gadget guide – go east!</strong></p>
<p>With Christmas just a few weeks away now Tokyo is the place to go for electrical bargains, with gadgets like Apple iPods, mobile phones and games consoles available at rock bottom prices. You can pick up a Nintendo Wii for just £107.22 in comparison to £192.99 here in the UK. However, if gadgets are your game, you would be well advised to steer clear of Norway where a Nokia N95 will set you back a wallet-busting £542, which makes Tokyo’s price of £258 look even better. Houston is great for DVD players with a top-of-the-range recordable LG available for £434. While you’re there why not get a new TV too, with a 32 inch flatscreen Panasonic Viera on sale for £420, well under half the price in Norway (£1115).</p>
<p><strong><br />
Scandinavia – it’s cold and expensive</strong></p>
<p>Those in the Nordic countries have it rough, not only do temperatures reach as low as -15 °C they also have the highest prices in the world for Milk, vodka, Bic Macs, cigarettes, consumer electronics, travel and even toys. Of the 26 items included in the study Norway was most expensive for 11 of them.</p>

<p>Where possible, three prices were collected for each product and the mean average was used as the country’s price for the product. No less than two prices per product per country have been used, with the exception of those products where prices are standardized, e.g. alcohol in Sweden or McDonalds. Prices, in most cases were collected from multiple-outlet retailer stores, to ensure that they are as closely representative of each country’s typical prices as possible.</p>
<p>The prices were collected October 1-12, 2007 and exchanges rates were from Bank of England, http://www.bankofengland.co.uk/ during Oct. 8-12, 2007.</p>

(Nasdaq: VCLK), has today released its 2004 price comparison study which reveals that UK cinema-goers are being ripped off compared to their European counterparts. On average consumers in the UK pay €14.30 for a cinema ticket, whilst in Lithuania the same ticket costs as little as €3.86. The study also reveals that compared to previous studies, home electronics goods in the UK are getting cheaper with digital cameras and iPods amongst the cheapest in Europe. Biscuits from the UK were also found to be the cheapest in Europe! </font></p>
<p><span id="more-64"></span><br />
<font face="Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif">The study, carried out in October 2004, covers 48 different consumer goods and home electronic products from 18 European countries. New countries added this year include the Czech Republic, Hungary, Estonia and Lithuania. In total, 1,794 prices were collected; the results detailing the price variations between each European country. This is the third consecutive year that PriceRunner has completed a price comparison study analysing the developments in pricing across Europe. These studies are an extension of the retail/pricing trend analysis that PriceRunner.com performs for its clients.</font></p>
<p><font face="Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif">Study findings in brief:</font></p>
<p>• <font face="Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif">The UK has the lowest prices for orange juice, biscuits, games, digital cameras and MP3 players – but is the most expensive for cinema tickets!</font></p>
<p>• <font face="Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif">This year Germany had the lowest prices for home electronics in Europe; the UK coming in third place. This is an improvement for the UK who last year came in fourth position.</font></p>
<p>• <font face="Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif">The study also found that the UK is on a par with the European average for consumer prices; however, it was revealed as one of the cheapest countries in Europe for home electronics such as digital cameras, games and consoles.</font></p>
<p>• <font face="Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif">Norway was found to be the most expensive country in Europe for consumables for the third consecutive year.</font></p>
<p>• <font face="Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif">The Baltic states of Estonia and Lithuania were found on average to be the cheapest within Europe, especially for consumer goods. Cigarettes were found to be particularly cheap in Lithuania as was petrol in Estonia.</font></p>
<p>• <font face="Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif">Prices in Lithuania were found to be 26% lower than average prices across Europe.</font></p>
<p>• <font face="Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif">Public transport in Norway is 94% more expensive than in Lithuania!</font></p>

PriceRunner’s price comparison study reveals that the UK is the third cheapest country for home electronics, with only Germany and Austria having lower prices within Europe. Germany has particularly improved its home electronic prices compared with last year, when it was ranked in 11th position. The chart below shows the average deviation from the European average prices for home electronic products.</font></p>

<p><font face="Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif"><strong>Expensive Cinema Seats, but Cheaper Biscuits!</strong><br />
The prices of adult cinema tickets in the UK were found to be the most expensive compared to other European countries, but biscuits and orange juice were found to be amongst the cheapest. Consumers pay an average of €14.30 for a cinema ticket in the UK whereas in Lithuania it only costs €3.86. Shopping for consumer goods is cheaper in both Lithuania and Estonia, but if you want a litre of milk or even condoms, the best place to go is the Czech Republic. Bus travel too is less expensive in Lithuania; a ticket to travel one zone costs €0.23, but it is 94% more expensive in Norway where consumers pay €3.68 for the equivalent journey.</font></p>

The study also revealed large price variations when PriceRunner compared 28 consumer goods across Europe, including condoms, nappies, a bottle of Coca Cola, Marlboro Lights, Pringles, Levis jeans, books, a litre of milk, a cinema ticket, a McDonald&#8217;s meal and a litre of petrol. Once again Norway ranked the most expensive country. UK prices were on a par with the European average and remain relatively stable compared to last year. Some Norwegian prices exceeded the European average by a 29%, whilst Lithuania had prices that were 34% less than the average.</font></p>

The prices within this reported were all collected by Pricerunner employees across 18 countries. The countries included in the study are shown below, with specific town information from where the prices were gathered shown in brackets. Austria (Vienna), Belgium (Brussels), Denmark (Copenhagen), Finland (Helsinki), France (Paris), Germany (Berlin), Greece (Athens), Ireland (Dublin), Norway (Oslo), Portugal (Lisbon), Switzerland (Geneva), Spain (Madrid), Sweden (Stockholm), England (London), Hungary (Budapest), Czech Republic (Prague), Estonia (Tallin) and Lithuania (Vilnius). Where possible, three prices were collected for each product and the mean average was used as the country&#8217;s price for the product. No less than two prices per product per country have been used, with the exception of those products where prices are standardised, e.g. alcohol in Sweden or McDonalds. Prices, in most cases were collected from multiple-outlet retail stores, to ensure that they are as closely representative of each country&#8217;s typical prices as possible. A European average price was then calculated, by compiling all countries&#8217; prices for each product. Thereafter each country&#8217;s average price was divided by the average price for all countries, generating the &#8220;average price deviation in relation to European average&#8221; which is presented in the charts above. As a number of products are included in, for example &#8220;Home electronics&#8221;, an average of the deviations has been calculated for home electronics in each respective country.
